This trip to 金门 (Kinmen) was an incredibly rewarding and unforgettable experience. It was my first time visiting, so I was initially uncertain about what the place and its people would be like. However, upon arrival, I was immediately overwhelmed by their genuine hospitality and the abundance of delicious food. I felt so welcomed, it was as though I had returned home. Everyone we met treated us with a warmth and kindness that felt like family.

The main purpose of our trip was to 寻根 (root seeking), or trace our roots. I must admit, I was quite nervous about meeting a relative so distant from me, someone raised in a completely different place and culture. But when I arrived in my ancestral hometown, I was embraced by the kindness of the locals, who eagerly showed me around and guided me to my relative’s house—no prompting necessary. The meeting with my relatives was incredibly memorable. Despite our differences, it was amazing to connect with someone who shared the same heritage.

Overall, this experience taught me the importance of understanding one’s family background and heritage. It also filled me with a profound sense of warmth and security, as I realized that no matter where I am, I have a family I can rely on.
